A New Earth
Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose
A New Earth … the study of this book is being turned into a short essay and a reference for further research. Notes & Quotes have been started and are in a constant process. As with most things in life, nothing should be believed until it is proven by practice…
After reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle several times, I found that Oprah had dedicated a 10 week discussion; each week to each chapter. This is a big deal on many different levels, but maybe the greatest promo for this book is that Oprah states that this book is the most important book she has ever read… not one of the best, but the best! I have added a notes section that is dedicated to only her discussion of the book.

Think and Grow Rich
Thomas A. Edison, said–
“This is not a novel. It is a textbook on individual achievement that came directly from the experiences of hundreds of America’s most successful men… This philosophy will not take the place of the subjects taught in schools, but it will enable one to organize and apply the knowledge acquired, and convert it into useful service and adequate compensation without waste of time.”
The Master Key System
…explains the correct use of both the receptive and active elements of the mental nature… recognition of opportunity; it strengthens the will and reasoning powers, and teaches the cultivation and best uses of imagination, desire, the emotions and the intuitional faculty. It gives initiative, tenacity of purpose, wisdom of choice, intelligent sympathy and a thorough enjoyment of life on its higher planes.
The Kybalion
… presenting to the attention of students and investigators of the Secret Doctrines this little work based upon the world-old Hermetic Teachings.

A New Earth Analysis
This analysis
A New Earth Summary
A New Earth…
1. The Flowering of Human Consciousness
- Acknowledge the essence of a flower and recognize that essence is actually a reflection of what is in you; you have entered the realm of spirit.
- Shift your consciousness through identifying with formless; rise above ego.
- Recognize your current blueprint involving the desires for more and eliminating fears; lift the veil of distortions.
- Observe and acknowledge your insanities; gain sanity.
- Understand the roles of spirituality and religion; emphasize space for potentiality.
- Know that evolution will come, when the definite need is upon you.
- Understand that Heaven is within you; the new reflection from within becomes the New Earth.
2. Ego: The Current State of Humanity
- Understand the reality of things in your life beyond words; go beyond the surface of things and break the spell.
- Begin to use the word “I” in ways that represent that which is above Ego; find your deepest truth beyond illusion and in reality.
- Become aware of the voice within; you are the Space where that voice resides (not the voice).
- Be aware of those things in which enhance your identity through association; the past conditions the ego through content and structure.
- Start Being through feeling; let go of attachments.
- Stop comparing; Having is not Being.
- Wanting is a structure that must be dismantled; The Ego is never satisfied or fulfilled.
- Shift attention from the external to the internal body; the body is a living energy field. Remember to identify with your formless self; identification with form occurs in both physical objects and thoughts.
- “I think, therefore I am” is not the ultimate truth; it is the root of the Ego.
- Emerging consciousness is sometimes unknowingly found through the loss of things important in your life… make it intentional.
3. The Core of Ego
- Identify Compulsive thinking; realize this egoic mind is not who you are.
- Thought and emotion is not the “I”; stop identifying with the past.
- All egos are built upon the same structure (identification and separation); only the surface is different.
- Recognize criticism and condemnation in and around you
- Overlook that unconscious actions of others; your perceptions may be skewed; reactions can amplify their faults in you.
- Recognize the ego in others; this radiating from the collective dysfunction of humanity.
- Don’t react as if you are personally being attacked; bring out the sanity (unconditioned consciousness) in others.
- Forgive, overlook, look through; this is strength not weakness.
- Realize that clinging to grievances has no purpose but in strengthening the ego; this is a main egoic structure.
- Be present Now; release the power (thought/emotion) of the past.
- Making others wrong, makes you superior; this strengthens the ego’s sense of self
- Be aware of fact vs opinion; no need to defend truth.
- Be aware of the circumstances; avoid dependance on perspective
- Thought can only point towards Truth; the finger pointing towards the moon is not the moon.
- Avoid the egoic sense of truth; your essense (love) is truth.
- The Ego is Not Personal
- Accommodate competing narratives; your perspective and story is your identification with your thoughts. (Halevi)
- Learn from your enimies; what you dislike in them is also in you.
- Stop reacting through a “War Mind-set”; what you fight or resist, only strenghthens and persists.
- Do You Want Peace or Drama?
- Identify when the reactive thoughts/emotions of conflict arise; those moments when you justify the drama and the need to be right (not at peace).
- “Awareness is the power concealed within the present moment.”
- Be a Witnessing Presence; this power will push the ego away.
- This power is only in the Now; past and future are only thoughts.
- Bring this power into the world; transform consciousness.
- Sense your Beingness (I Am that I Am) Now; hold this in your background always.
- Understand that Fear is the underlying motivator of the ego; it will never be able to eliminate it, only mask it with some “thing”.
- All “things” (structures) are unstable; within you is the formless, eternal life.
- Realize the the forms of ego within you and others; this awareness results in strengthening the “I”.
- The ego strives for (wants) superiority over others; this can be had through association with those that other egos see as superior.
- Practice presense in your relationships; no wanting (ego) at all, just focused attention in the Now of the moment.
- “The three predominant states of egoic relationship are: wanting, thwarted wanting (anger, resentment, blaming, complaining), and indifference.”
4. Role-playing: The Many Faces of the Ego
- Realize and acknowledge whenever you feel superior or inferior; identify this as an egoic role that is based on fear.
- If absent of positive attention, the ego may seek negative attention (villain); a person’s pain-body increases the need for more pain.
- Avoid identification with a sad story (victim); here the ego seeks sympathy from others and feeds the ego’s self-image.
- Understand the egoic mask(s) used in romantic relationships (lover); identify the wants & needs of both parties… learn to not want or need.
- Be ok with not knowing who you are; limitations are set when you define yourself through thought.
- Stop unconsciously playing (and identifying with) roles; become conscious while functioning in roles… keep a space around those roles.
- Most relationships are not reality, but conceptual minds interacting; become aware of the varying concepts being played out.
- Look upon conceptual interactions as a veil; lift the veil to acknowledge that “sameness” in all people.
- Identify and Accept any unhappiness within you; situations are always neutral, stop storytelling, face the facts and take action.
- Don’t seek happiness; free yourself from unhappiness and find inner peace.
- Stop being in the role of (and identifying with being) a parent; become aware and start functioning as a parent when and where needed.
- Give the child space to be; let them evolve… be present.
- Accept suffering (yours and others) with consciousness; accelerate transcendence from fire to light.
- Be authentic with your children; it is not enough to just do for them.
- Ensure that your “doing” remains rooted in your “Being”; be alert, still, and present in all that you do.
- Want nothing from the Now; accept the Now as it is.
- Understand the human being as a mesh of Human and Being; one is form and the other is formless.
- Recognize the Being in your child; this recognition (love) is desired by all, including children.
- Know that in form, you are more than or less than others (compared to); but in formless essence, you are equal with all.
- The Greek root of “Pathological” means suffering; the ego is pathological.
- Recognize negative thinking when it arises; shift from the ego to awareness.
- Discover more intelligent ways of reacting through awareness; the ego can be clever but rarely intelligent.
- “The ego creates separation, and separation creates suffering.”
- Identify background unhappiness, then disidentify with them; these can be impatience, irritation, or maybe a feeling of discontent.
- The underlying negative thoughts can be compared to the thinking while in a dream and not knowing that you are dreaming…
- Being at peace negates the ego; peace cannot be had in the future, it must be in the Now.
- “Being one with life is being one with Now.”
- “Life is the dancer, and you are the dance.”
- Look for thoughts that justify unhappiness; these thoughts are the cause.
- “Become aware of your thoughts and emotions as they happen.”
- Become the “light of Presence, the awareness that is prior to and deeper than any thoughts and emotions.”
- Realize that all of your dysfunction and suffering come from the ego; pause and put space around them.
- “Don’t seek truth. Just cease to cherish opinions.”
- See times when you work (do) with flow; nothing else is in the way, only your Being and doing.
- Appreciate everyone, including their successes; cooperate without cunning, shine with positivity.
- When sick, the ego should weaken not strengthen; energy is needed for healing.
- The personal ego may shift to the collective; do not revert to crowd mentality
- Create “enlightened” collectives; bring all into the light of awareness.
- You cannot lose what you are; you are life, so death is only an illusion.

7. Finding Who You Truly Are
Who You Think You Are; Abundance; Knowing Yourself and Knowing About Yourself; Chaos and Higher Order; Good and Bad; Not Minding What Happens; Is That So?; The Ego and the Present Moment; The Paradox of Time; Eliminating Time; The Dreamer and the Dream; Going Beyond Limitation; The Joy of Being; Allowing the Diminishment of the Ego; As Without, So Within
- “Know Thyself” or “Gnothi Seauton” were words seen but not fully understood by the many entering the temple of Apollo during ancient Greece.
- The deeper meaning of “Know Thyself” or “Who am I” cannot be found in the unconscious minds of the many… it lies in your Being…
WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE
- Those things that matter in your perceptions will hold power over you
- Things that upset you are who you are; All things are transient (only lasting for a short time)
- When confronted, stay aware and don’t react; accept the now, be conscious, respond from Being
- Ego sees the Ego in others, what you see in others is in you
- Know who you are not; remove the obstacles
ABUNDANCE
- Ego is “I am a needy ‘little me’ whose needs are not being met… creates dysfunction.”
- Don’t see lack in your life, see all the abundance; if you don’t have it, give it…
- Act as you have it, then give it; “outflow determines inflow.”
- “For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” -Jesus
KNOWING YOURSELF AND KNOWING ABOUT YOURSELF
- All that you know about your self is only content, not your essence
- Step out of content, past the ego; don’t identify with “things”
- Your essence enables content
CHAOS AND HIGHER ORDER
- Understanding cannot come through content; harmony is in stillness
- Seeming chaos conceals an unperceivable order; remove thought to come into alignment
GOOD AND BAD
- Good and bad are the same except through thought; relative illusion
- Refuse to judge; accept and align with the higher order (cosmos)
- There are no random events
- There is no Chaos (disorder) in the Cosmos (order)
NOT MINDING WHAT HAPPENS
- “I don’t mind what happens.” -Krishnamurti
- be inwardly aligned with what happens; nonresistant
- don’t label the Now, let it be
- act with the power of Life itself
IS THAT SO?
- “Bad turns into Good through the power of nonresistance.”; respond to what the Now requires.
THE EGO AND THE PRESENT MOMENT
- “The ego could be defined simply in this way: a dysfunctional relationship with the present moment.”; determine your relationship with the Now.
- Become friends with the Now; don’t depend on Past or Future
- Ego sees the Now as either “a means to an end, as an obstacle, or as an enemy.”
- Means to an end (best?); to a better future moment
- Obstacle; moment to be overcome (stress); problems to no end
- Enemy (worst?); hate the Now; hostile external and internal state
- Unmask the Ego by becoming aware of your relationship with the Now; Presence points right direction
THE PARADOX OF TIME
- Time appears to be a never-ending string of events (Nows); illusion
- Reality is there is a continuous Now; there can be only this moment
- Life unfolds in a constant Now; Content is responsible for the illusion of time and ego
- Time controls everything, but everything is in the Now; experience is only in the Now, there is no time… Paradox
ELIMINATING TIME
- Time is in the mind; needed for sensory perception; a hindrance to knowing yourself
- Time is horizontal, Now is vertical; get rid of time… get rid of ego
- Clock time (needed for survival) vs Psychological time (Ego’s past/future)
- Ego is never satisfied in the Now
- Who you are is formless Presence in the Now
THE DREAMER AND THE DREAM
- “Nonresistance is the key to the greatest power in the universe.”
- Things happen, then they are gone, like a dream; it wasn’t real?
- The dreamer is absolute reality, where forms come and go; the dreamer is not the person.
- “The person is part of the dream; the dreamer makes the dream possible; absolute behind relative; consciousness in and behind form”
- We must awaken within the dream, a new earth…
GOING BEYOND LIMITATION
- Effective action requires Presence and a friendly relation with the Now; attention and focus.
- Form is limitation; must experience limitation and go beyond it into formless
- Overcome externally and internally; internal requires acceptance (nonresistance) of Now
- “The surrendered state of consciousness opens up the vertical dimension in your life, the dimension of depth. Something will then come forth from that dimension into this world, something of infinite value that otherwise would have remained unmanifested.”
- Live in surrender… “Who could have wished for more?” -Stephen Hawking
THE JOY OF BEING
- “People believe themselves to be dependent on what happens for their happiness, that is to say dependent on form.”
- “Accept the present moment and find the perfection that is deeper than any form and untouched by time. The joy of Being, which is the only true happiness, cannot come to you through any form, possession, achievement, person, or event through anything that happens. That joy cannot come to you ever. It emanates from the formless dimension within you, from consciousness itself and thus is one with who you are.”
ALLOWING THE DIMINISHMENT OF THE EGO
- Ego automatically repairs itself of criticisms through defensive reactions like anger…
- Allow self-diminishment of ego, then put space around the feeling; you feel more alive, expanded.
- through becoming less, you become more; Being, True Power beyond form; Deny yourself.
- align with the universe by being content with being “no body”
- be the valley instead of the mountain; all things will come to you
AS WITHOUT, SO WITHIN
- Looking into the night sky you see Objects and Space; Things and No-Thingness
- Inner space of consciousness is awareness; vast depth of space; stillness with no form
- You are not the content, but the space
- “God, the scripture is saying, is formless consciousness and the essence of who you are. Everything else is form, is what people here adore.”
- “A sane, balanced, and fruitful human life is a dance between the two dimensions that make up reality: form and space.”
- “Existence is the foreground of life; Being is the background, as it were.”
- “Here are the two dimensions that make up reality, thingness and no-thingness, form and the denial of form, which is the recognition that form is not who you are.”

NOTES – QUOTES
Oprah’s Interview with Eckhart Tolle
A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle is an amazing book. Oprah says this is THE most important book she has ever read… This section contains each of the chapters of the book with Oprah’s interview with Eckhart on each.
1. The Flowering of Human Consciousness
Evocation; The Purpose of This Book; Our Inherited Dysfunction; The Arising New Consciousness; Spirituality and Religion; The Urgency of Transformation; A New Heaven and a New Earth
Notes:
The most important book I have ever read. -Oprah
Quiet your mind. Learn how to be more present. Things don’t give happiness; comes from inside you. Be still with nature, it is an access point. Flowers are messengers from another realm; spirit flows through them; “look at the lilies of the field”. Find the depths of dimensions within you. Appreciate nature’s things without naming them. Be present without thought. Mental labels are needed when needed; perceive through stillness. Everything is vibrating. (10:00) Most aging results in lifeless non-present lost in thought.
Take God out of the box of religion; God is in all things. Shift consciousness, Awaken. Go deeper to find truth, where God and you merge. Old vs New Spirituality; know and love yourself. Many paths to your own. Free thinking Christian. (20:00)
The voice in my head… conditioned thinking; recognize this happening. Don’t totally identify with this, be the awareness of this when it occurs. Be the witness, don’t need to act on it. A small part of consciousness; need space between thoughts, expand the space. (24:30)
Ask God to use you. Ask life to use you. Be in the Now. Let the Universal Energy (Spirit) flow out in all that you do. Consciousness not conditioned thinking.
Groups practicing being present. Energy field created. Don’t be dependant on any group; live presence in daily life. You don’t become good by trying to be good… find that goodness in you and let it flow out. Beware of ego when trying to be good. Find the realm of formless, unconditioned (no good and bad). Be still and know that I AM God. (33:00)
Look at nature; be with a “tree”. Sense the presence of it, a door to your own stillness. Sacred is the essence of who you are.
Self-talk. There are two of you… I can’t live with myself. Who are the Me and I… Ego is the Me; Me does the thinking. Ego is the unobserved mind. Wake up the I in you and the Ego starts to dissolve. The mind becomes still. (40:00)
The heavy burden of your Me is released. Am I still breathing? Attention moves towards the air flowing in and out of your body… you are present in the moment; different state of consciousness. Stop the means to an end mentality. All you have is Now. Be present with the “things” around you.
Satisfaction does not come from the egoic mind. True satisfaction doesn’t come from form (the world of things); only frustration or wanting more.
(49:30) The basis for life is the present moment. Accept this moment as it is, no neediness, no dissatisfaction. Be friendly with life, now. No negative attitude or struggle, accept then take action with empowerment from life itself.
(52:00) Awareness behind your thoughts (spirit).
This book is a tool to find your process in finding your Presence. Must experience in your own way… you may not yet be ready…

Notes:
Oprah’s favorite chapter. Know Thyself above a sacred Greek Temple; Who Am I? Decide who you are not… then who you are will be revealed. When things are taken away from you, things that you had identified with, you realize that part of you was not really who you are… acceptance of the present moment… discover the light behind the tapestry (The tapestry (or quilt?) has everything that you identify with, when something is taken away there is a hole with light shining through…) is who you are… (9:00) rooted in being (not lost in mind) is knowing yourself… we are not are roles, honor but don’t identify with the function, beyond conception… reaction identifies what level you are at… (13:00) horizontal dimension (past/present); vertical is deeper (the now)… back to breath, aware, conscious, …liberation from the horizontal… (16:00) sensitive caller; attention to the situation 3 levels; what disturbs you (trigger), reaction (physical, emotional, mental), awareness (space)… become focused on the awareness (observing ego behavior)… beginning of freedom. (20:00) don’t be the reaction… become more alert and open to the situation… words will come (24:00). Intuitively out of presence. No negativity.
(189) Who you are has nothing to do with what you think you are… (28:00) dash between birth and death on tombstone. (192) knowing about yourself is only content, taste the honey, the honey becomes part of you “now”… (32:45) Caller; letting go of ego; eating disorder; derive sense of self from mental images… hindrance; find something more genuine, make room for present moment… ego doesn’t operate; aliveness of you, inner space, detach from image, choose over the little me… it works for you at this point… bring more and more consciousness into daily life. (38:20) Abundance. Give what you most want. Recognition of external abundance in all things, always there… gratitude. everyday write down 5 things grateful for. “The fullness of Life – Jesus” talking about the dimension within you. (43:00). Inner state of gratitude. -Negativity generated by individuals; become aware / recognize when it arises, never the best way to handle situations. You are joy or you are not. right relation with present moment… awake within the dream. (215) allow diminishment of ego. (47:00) don’t try to restore; don’t defend, allow diminishment; ego retaliates… instant self repair mechanism. sense the inner space, you have grown… allow the ego to shrink. (51:00) High Quality Now, say yes to present moment; …form is only one dimension; forgotten essence of realm other than form… words are limitations. Being Yourself totally is Knowing yourself… I AM… (don’t fill in blank)… Who am I… (no answer… space).
8. The Discovery of Inner Space
Object Consciousness and Space Consciousness; Falling Below and Rising Above Thought; Television; Recognizing Inner Space; Can You Hear the Mountain Stream?; Right Action; Perceiving Without Naming; Who Is the Experiencer?; The Breath; Addictions; Inner Body Awareness; Inner and Outer Space; Noticing the Gaps; Lose Yourself to Find Yourself; Stillness

9. Your Inner Purpose
Awakening; A Dialogue on Inner Purpose
Notes:
… Finding true purpose. Most people live their lives in constant dissatisfaction, just surviving… caught up in the doing. Not the future (outer purpose), most important is inner purpose… align life with present moment, otherwise in unalignment; become one with now. Be true to life by being true to now. Step now is primary, destination is secondary. Doing your best now leads to the next best now.
No worries, if you can’t take action now… put it aside. Don’t live life as destination is most important; don’t deny life now. Don’t pollute the earth with negative energy. Type of energy now will be in the manifested result in the future.
Being-inner purpose, Doing-outer purpose. Life will become helpful through alignment with now. The power of life is in the being in the now, same with all. Joy through being. Don’t fight against the power of life. Don’t go against the flow of inner purpose. Use personality to serve inner purpose; mind becomes the servant. Awareness takes over, thinking becomes the servant of awareness.
Goal, allow the light to flow out in everything we do; flowering of consciousness (light of God); fuel for what you do. How you do it is more important than what you do. Live/enjoy uncertainty. Be comfortable with not knowing. (19:00). Life is an adventure. Being faced with uncertainty provides growth; make mistakes to find what is right for you. Displeasure moves you from one space to another.
(23:00) Give up things to provide space needed. Spiritual Teacher. At ease with not knowing. Fear is no longer dominate; energy is allowed to flow. What do you enjoy doing? Enjoy present moment… (27:00) Doesn’t come from your mind; be still and let feeling flow out. Avoid dissatisfaction; inner space clear… be still, universe will rise up to meet you. Be alert for the openings.
(29:30) Separation from doing / Awakening. Don’t look outside yourself. God is love, if you love your job or activities… is this alignment? Love means different things to people; it’s not an obsession… the energy moves into what you are doing and into the world. Find God everywhere. Now is sacred. Be present in the Now. Thinking-Awareness Separation. Doing is not a means to an end… be present in what you do, allow energy to flow into it. (37:00)
State of consciousness while doing; future is secondary. (41:30) Apologies needed by the ego, keeping score; be aware of this type of thinking; what emotions rise. Interpretations of the circumstance can be completely different; resentments and grievances are from the ego… Opportunity for awareness.
Evolutionary Impulse of the universe (46:00); growth of consciousness flowing into physical world… foundation of new earth. Arising of awareness and presence; as above so below. Go within to verify and find answers; tap into the universal energy. Allow the energy to flow out from you; this is inner purpose. Stillness in you is the only way to experience silence. (53:00) Listen for what comes out of stillness / silence. Answers come from stillness, movement of thought… write it down.
Negativity loves ego. (58:00) Goodness flows out. You and God merge. I AM That which comes from God. After awakening, bring acceptance to what you are doing now; state of clarity. Surrender. Be willing to accept this moment. Great arises from small things; honor the small things of the present moment. Every moment is small steps; be true to this moment… paper, pen, stillness. Simple. Bring the sense of presence to every moment, not your ego.

Can you continue in current religious practices and still be on your own path to spiritual enlightenment? How does this make it easier to share? Can you picture and document your state of consciousness? What religions will welcome this new spirituality?
You should continue your current religious practices (for as long as neccessary); use them to transform your consciousness and help others. Helping others doesn’t have to include you trying to force them onto your new path. Be the flower with unknown seeds. If your truth can be shared in ways that is not going against their beliefs, they will welcome the seeds of truth. All types of religious people can make your truths their own. The state of consciousness you hold (as often as possible) should be a space (awareness/presence) for potentiality; …
-The new spirituality, the transformation of consciousness, is arising to a large extent outside of the structures of the existing institutionalized religions.
-They realize that how spiritual you are has nothing to do with what you believe but everything to do with your state of consciousness. This, in turn, determines how you act in the world and interact with others.
THE URGENCY OF TRANSFORMATION
What are the steps in becoming aware of the space that provides potentiality for everything? What can be done to dis-identify yourself from forms. How can you better connect and prevent unconnectedness? Can you identify and still be connected?
-new consciousness is the transcendence of thought… rising above thought… becoming aware of a dimension that is infinitely more vast than thought… The awareness that is prior to thought, the space prior to thought, emotion, or sense perception takes place…
-Ego is identification with thought forms… evil is relative, not absolute, reality this is also and is complete identification with form… a total unawareness of connectedness with the whole… This forgetfulness is original sin, suffering, delusion…
A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH
How could you explain the concept of your inner realm of consciousness being heaven and the reflection being earth? Can you transform your consciousness to create a new heaven/earth?
-heaven refers to an inner realm of consciousness that is withen each of us… this meaning can be seen in the teachings of Jesus. Earth is the Reflection of the inner and is the Manifestation of form… so, a new heaven occurs through transformation of consciousness and in turn creates a new earth..
2. Ego: The Current State of Humanity
WORDS
What process can be created and followed to analyze the gap between perception and interpretation? Can the “screen” talked about in the 6th sense (Kabbalah Revealed) be used to feel the bestowing in giving? Does the Tree of Life have anything to offer here? How do you avoid becoming hypnotized by words? How can you sense a thing below its surface layer of reality? What things are you identifying your sense of I (beingness) with ? How can you perceive something without the use of words?
-Words can cast an almost hypnotic spell upon you.
-Underneath the surface appearance, everything is not only connected with everything else, but also with the Source of all life out of which it came.
-you need to disentangle your sense of I, of Beingness, from all the things it has become mixed up with, that is to say, identified with.
-All we can perceive, experience, think about, is the surface layer of reality, less than the tip of an iceberg. Words reduce reality to something the human mind can grasp, which isn’t very much.
THE ILLUSORY SELF
-The word I embodies the greatest error and the deepest truth, depending on how it is used.
-I embodies the primordial error, a misperception of who you are, an illusory sense of identity. This is the ego. This illusory sense of self is what Albert Einstein, who had deep insights not only in to the reality of space and time but also into human nature, referred to as an optical illusion of consciousness.
THE VOICE IN THE HEAD
-thinking without awareness is the main dilemma of human existence… thinking is only a tiny aspect of the consciousness
humans use conditioned thinking; voices in the head… be there as the observer, not the voice; I AM the space where the voice resides. (While thinking, make it a point to also observe your thinking…)
CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF THE EGO
-The egoic mind is completely conditioned by the past. Its conditioning is twofold: It consists of content and structure.
-The unconscious compulsion to enhance ones identity through association with an object is built into the very structure of the egoic mind.
-One of the most basic mind structures through which the ego comes into existence is identification.
IDENTIFICATION WITH THINGS
-The people in the advertising industry know very well that in order to sell things that people dont really need, they must convince them that those things will add something to how they see themselves or are seen by others; in other words, add something to their ***sense of self***. They do this, for example, by telling you that you will stand out from the crowd by using this product and so by implication be more fully yourself.
-What you identify with is all to do with content; whereas, the unconscious compulsion to identify is structural.
THE LOST RING
-feel the answer instead of thinking; being must be felt. Whatever the ego seeks and gets attached to are substitutes for the Being that it cannot feel.
-It doesnt mean you should never lock your door. All it means is that sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.
THE ILLUSION OF OWNERSHIP
-In the last moments of their life, they then also realize that while they were looking throughout their lives for a more complete sense of self, what they were really looking for, their Being, had actually always already been there, but had been largely obscured by their identification with things, which ultimately means identification with their mind.
-The ego tends to equate having with Being: I have, therefore I am. And the more I have, the more I am. The ego lives through comparison. How you are seen by others turns into how you see yourself.
-I am the awareness that is aware that there is attachment. Thats the beginning of the transformation of consciousness.
WANTING: THE NEED FOR MORE
-The ego identifies with having, but its satisfaction in having is a relatively shallow and short lived one. Concealed within it remains a deep seated sense of dissatisfaction, of incompleteness, of not enough. I don’t have enough yet, by which the ego really means, I am not enough yet.
-ownership is a fiction created by the ego
-the structure of the ego: the need for more, which we could also call wanting. No ego can last for long without the need for more. Therefore, wanting keeps the ego alive much more than having. The ego wants to want more than it wants to have.
-Wanting is structural, so no amount of content can provide lasting fulfillment as long as that mental structure remains in place. Intense wanting that has no specific object can often be found in the still? developing ego of teenagers, some of whom are in a permanent state of negativity and dissatisfaction.
-No content will satisfy you, as long as the egoic structure remains in place. No matter what you have or get, you won’t be happy. You will always be looking for something else that promises greater fulfillment, that promises to make your incomplete sense of self complete and fill that sense of lack you feel within.
IDENTIFICATION WITH THE BODY
-Apart from objects, another basic form of identification is with my body. Firstly, the body is male or female, and so the sense of being a man or woman takes up a significant part of most people’s sense of self. Gender becomes identity.
-Life’s fulfillment is perceived to be fulfillment of one’s gender identity.
FEELING THE INNER BODY
-Although body?identification is one of the most basic forms of ego, the good news is that it is also the one that you can most easily go beyond. This is done not by trying to convince yourself that you are not your body, but by shifting your attention from the external form of your body and from thoughts about your body beautiful, ugly, strong, weak, too fat, too thin to the feeling of aliveness inside it. No matter what your body’s appearance is on the outer level, beyond the outer form it is an intensely alive energy field.
FORGETFULNESS OF BEING
–Ego is always identification with form, seeking yourself and thereby losing yourself in some form. Forms are not just material objects and physical bodies. More fundamental than the external forms things and bodies are the thought forms that continuously arise in the field of consciousness. They are energy formations, finer and less dense than physical matter, but they are forms nonetheless.
FROM DESCARTES’S ERROR TO SARTRE’S INSIGHT…
-The seventeenth?century philosopher Descartes, regarded as the founder of modern philosophy, gave expression to this primary error with his famous dictum (which he saw as primary truth): I think, therefore I am. This was the answer he found to the question Is there anything I can know with absolute certainty? He realized that the fact that he was always thinking was beyond doubt, and so he equated thinking with Being, that is to say, identity I am with thinking. Instead of the ultimate truth, he had found the root of the ego, but he didn’t know that.
THE PEACE THAT PASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING
-There are many accounts of people who experienced that emerging new dimension of consciousness as a result of tragic loss at some point in their lives. Some lost all of their possessions, others their children or spouse, their social position, reputation, or physical abilities. In some cases, through disaster or war, they lost all of these simultaneously and found themselves with nothing.
